overlay network
A Docker network that spans every node of a swarm, carrying container traffic between hosts in VXLAN packets.
In more detail
Services attach to it with --network, and each service gets a virtual IP and a DNS name on it. Nodes need UDP 4789 open between them, and the encrypted option adds IPsec.

- VXLAN — An overlay that carries layer two network segments inside UDP packets across a layer three network, allowing about sixteen million segments instead of the 4,094 a VLAN allows.
- virtual IP — A swarm service's single address on each of its networks, which the engine balances across the service's tasks.
