kernel module

A piece of the Linux kernel, such as a device driver, that can be loaded and unloaded while the system runs.

In more detail

lsmod lists loaded modules, modinfo describes one, and modprobe loads a module with its dependencies, which depmod records in modules.dep. A blacklist line in /etc/modprobe.d stops automatic loading, and a file in /etc/modules-load.d loads one at boot.
