storage area network
A dedicated network that gives servers block storage on shared disk arrays, so each server sees the storage as its own local disk.
Because every host in a cluster can reach the same volumes, a virtual machine can move or restart on another host without copying its disk. It usually runs over Fibre Channel or Ethernet and is kept apart from ordinary traffic. Network-attached storage shares files instead of blocks.
