software-defined networking

An approach in which a central controller programs how the network forwards traffic, instead of configuring each switch and router by hand.

The control decisions move into software that holds the whole picture, while the devices only forward packets. A cloud virtual network is built this way: routes, subnets and filters are set through an API and the provider applies them everywhere. It makes networks repeatable and quick to change, and is what infrastructure as code drives.
