The Kafka setting that says whether a connection is encrypted with TLS and whether it authenticates with SASL.

There are four values: PLAINTEXT, SSL, SASL_PLAINTEXT and SASL_SSL. A client's value must match the listener it connects to. SASL_PLAINTEXT sends credentials unencrypted, so production clusters use SASL_SSL or SSL.
