physical extent

The fixed-size unit, 4 MiB by default, in which LVM hands out a volume group's space.

In more detail

Every logical volume is a whole number of extents, so sizes round up to the extent size. vgcreate -s chooses the size when the group is created, and lvcreate -l asks for a number of extents instead of a size.

Example

vgcreate -s 8M vgdata /dev/vdb
