optical character recognition

A service that reads the text in an image or a scanned document and returns it as machine-readable text.

Cloud providers offer it as a managed service called by API, often with form and table extraction. The input is an image and the output is text, which tells it apart from visual recognition, whose output is labels. Handwriting and poor scans lower its accuracy, so important fields are usually checked by a person.
