network bonding
Joining several network cards into one logical link, for failover or more bandwidth.
In more detail
The kernel's bonding driver presents the cards as one interface, such as bond0. Mode active-backup uses one card and switches to another when its link fails, which the MII monitor detects; mode 802.3ad (LACP) spreads traffic over all cards but needs a matching switch configuration. On Ubuntu a bond is defined in a netplan file under bonds:.
