network block device
A block device whose data lives on another machine, reached over the network and used like a local disk.
In more detail
nbd-server exports a file or a disk under a name; on the client, nbd-client attaches it to a device such as /dev/nbd0, which can then be formatted and mounted. /etc/nbdtab lists the attachments to make at boot, and on Ubuntu the nbd@nbd0 service makes them. Only one client should write to an export at a time.
Example
