fully qualified domain name
A host's complete name including every domain level, such as node1.lab.example.com, as opposed to the short host name node1.
In more detail
DNS resolves it to the host's address without relying on a search domain. Ansible gathers it as the fqdn fact (ansible_facts['fqdn']), which templates use when a file must name the host exactly.
